“It wasn’t the subject – conflict with the tsar, conflict at court, the banishing of the poet from the palace, worldly life, the monastery – these were not the point of my scenario, but the colours, the de- tails of the daily life that accompanied the poetry. [...] Then there was the thought: my throat is dry, I am ill. The poet dies. Every- thing is so simple, clear, as in the fate of a great poet, an ashugh, a minstrel.”

S. Parajanov

 Sergei Parajanov (1924-1989)

Born of Armenian parents in Tbilisi, Parajanov studied at VGIK in Moscow. Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors (1964) clashed with the principles of Socialist Realism. Despite the worldwide critical acclaim of The Color of Pomegranates (1969), Parajanov was imprisoned in 1974 to for his political opinions and sexual orientation. After 15 years of being blacklisted, he was able to finally make The Legend of Suram Fortress (1985), Arabesques on the Theme Pirosmani (1986) and Ahik Kerib (1988). His autobiographical film Confession (1989) was left unfinished due to his death.
